The Keepers Arms, Quenington
Quenington is the kind of Cotswolds village that most people drive straight past on their way to Bibury or Cirencester. A handful of honey-coloured stone cottages, a Norman church with extraordinary carved doorways, and a pub on Church Road that has been doing things right since 2007. The Keepers Arms is family-run, fiercely independent, and completely unpretentious — which is precisely why it works so well.
The owners have kept things deliberately simple. There is no overwrought gastropub menu here, no foam or jus in sight. Instead, you get a short, focused selection of dishes chalked up on blackboards, all built around locally sourced seasonal ingredients. The kitchen concentrates on quality over quantity, and it shows. The homemade burgers are regularly described as some of the best you will find in any Cotswold pub. Fish and chips are done properly. And if you are visiting on a Sunday, the roast is outstanding — generous slabs of beef, a Yorkshire pudding the size of your head, roasted carrots and parsnips, red cabbage, and a bowl of roast potatoes that keeps on giving. Mains sit roughly in the sixteen to twenty-two pound range, which feels remarkably fair for this part of the world.
At the bar, you will find cask ales that have earned the pub a place in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide every year since 2010. They won CAMRA's Cirencester Pub of the Year in 2017, and in 2015 they took the top prize on Channel 4's Four in a Bed. None of this has gone to their heads.
